Does induction of labour treat oligohydramnios?

Oligohydramnios means there is less amniotic fluid than expected around the baby. Fluid levels can change during pregnancy, and clinicians interpret the ultrasound finding alongside gestational age, fetal growth, movements, blood-flow checks and other signs of wellbeing. Induction is a way of starting labour; it does not replace the fluid or correct the reason it is low. If the pregnancy is far enough along, birth may reduce concerns linked with continuing to monitor a low-fluid pregnancy.

Attend the follow-up checks arranged by your maternity team and ask how the fluid measurement was made. Keep track of your baby’s usual movements and follow the advice you were given about when to contact the unit. Contact your maternity unit promptly if your baby’s movements are reduced or changed, if you think your waters have broken, or if you develop vaginal bleeding, regular painful contractions or severe abdominal pain. Seek urgent help for severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling or feeling very unwell, because these can need immediate assessment in pregnancy.

Ask what the fluid measurement shows, whether repeat ultrasound or fetal monitoring is needed, and what findings would change the timing of birth. You can also ask which induction method is being considered, how long the process may take, and what happens if labour does not start or monitoring becomes concerning.
