Does impetigo cause crusting skin?

Crusting Skin is a very common presentation of Impetigo. The crust may look yellow-brown or honey-coloured and can form over a red, moist area. Impetigo can spread through scratching, shared towels, close contact, or contact with fluid from a sore. Crusting alone does not identify the cause; eczema, an irritated wound, and other infections can also change the skin surface.

Gently wash the area with water and mild cleanser, then pat it dry. Do not pick the crusts or squeeze blisters. Cover oozing areas with clean clothing or a light dressing, wash hands after touching the skin, and avoid sharing towels, bedding, clothing, or cosmetics. A clinician may recommend a prescribed topical or oral treatment depending on how many areas are involved and where they are located.

Arrange medical advice if the crusting is spreading, returning, painful, or not settling with basic care. Seek prompt assessment for fever, marked swelling, rapidly worsening redness, pus, eye involvement, or sores near the eye. Children should stay home from close-contact activities until a clinician advises that they can return.

Ask whether the appearance fits impetigo or another skin problem, whether treatment should be applied to each sore, and how to reduce spread at home. Mention any fever, new areas, allergies, eczema, or recent contact with someone who had similar sores.
