Does immunotherapy treat melanoma?

Melanoma is a skin cancer that can spread beyond its original site. Immunotherapy medicines remove certain brakes on immune activity or otherwise direct immune cells toward cancer. They may be used after surgery or when melanoma cannot be treated with local surgery alone. The choice depends on the melanoma’s stage, molecular features, spread, prior treatment, and your general health. Immunotherapy is not suitable for every person and is planned by an oncology team.

Ask the oncology team to explain the treatment goal, available medicine, infusion or tablet schedule, monitoring plan, and other options. Keep a record of new symptoms rather than waiting for the next appointment. Immune treatment can affect organs such as the skin, bowel, lungs, liver, thyroid, or adrenal glands. Do not start supplements, stop regular medicines, or manage a new symptom alone without checking with the team.

Contact the oncology team promptly for a widespread rash, severe diarrhoea, persistent vomiting, yellowing of the skin, unusual shortness of breath, chest pain, severe headache, confusion, marked weakness, or reduced urine. Some immune-related effects can worsen quickly and need treatment interruption or medicines that calm the immune response. For severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or sudden confusion, seek emergency care.

Ask why immunotherapy is recommended for your melanoma, how response will be assessed, which side effects require a same-day call, and whether autoimmune disease, transplant history, pregnancy, or current medicines change the plan.
