Does ichthyosis cause scaly skin?

Healthy skin continually sheds small amounts of its outer cells. In ichthyosis, that process may be faster, slower, or uneven, allowing cells to collect into flakes or plate-like scale. The scale may look white, grey, brown, or darker than surrounding skin, depending on natural skin tone and the body area. It often appears on the limbs or trunk and may occur alongside dryness, tightness, rough texture, or itch.

Scaling can also follow eczema, psoriasis, irritation, fungal infection, or very dry weather. A clinician may ask when it began, whether it changes with seasons, and whether other family members have similar skin before identifying the pattern.

Soften scale with a regular fragrance-free moisturiser, especially after a short warm bath or shower. Avoid scraping, peeling, or vigorous scrubbing, which can create tiny breaks and worsen irritation. If scale remains thick, a clinician may suggest a carefully chosen keratolytic product and explain where it is safe to use. Keep nails short if itching leads to scratching.

Seek medical advice if scaling appears suddenly, spreads quickly, becomes painful, or is accompanied by marked redness, swelling, oozing, or fever. Review is also useful when it affects the scalp, eyelids, or skin folds, or when moisturising does not ease cracking and discomfort. Extensive scaling in a young child warrants assessment rather than home peeling.
