Does tubal dye test treat blocked fallopian tubes?

Hysterosalpingography uses imaging while contrast fluid passes through the cervix and uterus. The clinician watches whether the fluid travels through each fallopian tube and spills beyond its end. This can show a blockage, a change in the shape of the womb, or tubes that appear open. Occasionally, fluid may move through a tube that was narrowed by mucus or minor debris, but a tubal dye test is not a planned way to clear scar tissue or repair damaged tubes. A result can also be unclear, so your clinician may recommend another scan or procedure before deciding what the finding means.

Discuss the result with a fertility or gynaecology clinician. The next step depends on whether one or both tubes appear affected, where the blockage sits, your age and fertility history, and other factors such as ovulation and sperm health. Treatment may involve monitoring, surgery, or assisted conception, but the choice needs an individual assessment. Contact the clinic promptly after the test if you develop fever, worsening pelvic pain, foul-smelling discharge, heavy bleeding, faintness, or a rash or breathing problem. Mild cramping or light spotting can occur, but symptoms that intensify or make you feel unwell need assessment. A suspected blockage itself is not an emergency, although sudden severe pain requires urgent care.
