Does hypoglycaemia cause slurred speech?

A person with low glucose may sound drunk, use the wrong words, struggle to concentrate, or seem confused. They may also sweat, shake, feel hungry, become weak, or behave differently. Speech changes can improve as glucose is corrected, but slurred speech can also signal a stroke or another emergency, so the timing and other symptoms matter.

If the person is awake, alert, and able to swallow, check their glucose if possible and use the fast-acting carbohydrate advised in their diabetes plan. Recheck according to that plan and provide a follow-up snack or meal if recommended. Do not give food or drink to someone who is drowsy, choking, or unable to swallow. Stay with them and note when the speech change began.

Call emergency services immediately if speech becomes suddenly slurred, especially with facial drooping, arm weakness, severe headache, trouble walking, or confusion, because stroke treatment is time-sensitive. Seek urgent care if glucose does not improve, the person cannot swallow, loses consciousness, or the cause is uncertain. Do not assume that a speech change is only low blood sugar.
