Does hypertension cause headache?

Many people with hypertension have no symptoms, while a marked rise in pressure may be accompanied by headache, visual changes, dizziness, or nausea. The pain may feel diffuse, throbbing, or unusually intense, but its pattern cannot confirm the cause by itself.

Headache can also follow dehydration, infection, poor sleep, migraine, muscle tension, or medicine changes. A clinician will ask about onset, location, severity, associated symptoms, and your blood-pressure readings. This context helps distinguish a routine headache from a situation needing urgent treatment.

If headaches recur or appear alongside raised readings, book a review. Rest quietly, recheck blood pressure using the method your clinician recommended, and write down the reading, time, symptoms, and medicines taken. Do not change or stop prescribed treatment without advice. Hydration, regular meals, sleep, and limiting known personal triggers may help ordinary headaches, but they do not replace assessment of persistent high readings.

Call emergency services for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, seizure, chest pain, breathlessness, or a major change in vision. Headache with fever and a stiff neck also needs urgent assessment. These features may indicate stroke, infection, or another emergency and should not be attributed to hypertension alone.
