Does hydrotherapy help with joint stiffness?

Short answer
Hydrotherapy may ease joint stiffness by warming tissues and supporting controlled movement, but the response depends on its cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How water affects movement
Warm water can help muscles relax, and buoyancy reduces the load on joints while a person moves through a comfortable range. Gentle walking, stretching, and strengthening can practise movement without the same demand as land exercise. Stiffness may have many causes, including injury, arthritis, or prolonged rest, so pool exercise should match the diagnosis and current mobility. See [Joint Stiffness](/symptoms/joint-stiffness/) and [Hydrotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/hydrotherapy/).
Making sessions useful
A physiotherapist can assess which joints are restricted and select movements that gradually challenge range, balance, and strength. Tell them about pain, dizziness, skin concerns, wounds, continence, heart or breathing conditions, and difficulty entering the pool. Use steady breathing, avoid forcing a painful range, and follow advice about rest and activity after sessions.
When to seek care
Seek prompt assessment if stiffness appears suddenly with marked swelling, redness, heat, fever, or inability to move the joint. Stop exercise for chest pain, severe breathlessness, faintness, or new neurological symptoms. Following an injury, obtain advice before returning to pool activity.
Questions for your doctor
What is limiting my joint movement? Is hydrotherapy appropriate now? Which range-of-motion exercises are suitable, and what changes should prompt a review?
