Does hormone therapy treat endometrial hyperplasia?

Endometrial hyperplasia means that the womb lining has become thicker because the lining cells are growing under an imbalance of hormonal signals. A tissue sample is used to check whether atypical cells are present and to guide care. Progestogen treatment may counter the effect of oestrogen and help the lining become thinner.

Cancer hormone therapy is designed for selected cancers and follows a different treatment plan. Hyperplasia is not automatically cancer, but some forms need close follow-up because cellular changes can become more concerning. The right medicine and delivery method depend on the biopsy result, bleeding pattern, age, and pregnancy plans.

Ask the gynaecology team what the biopsy showed and whether the recommended progestogen should be taken as tablets or delivered through an intrauterine system. Confirm when the lining will be checked again and what to do if bleeding continues. Take treatment as prescribed and mention medicines that affect bleeding.

Arrange an assessment for bleeding after menopause, unusually heavy periods, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after sex. Seek urgent care for bleeding that makes you faint or weak, severe pelvic pain, fever, or pregnancy-related pain or bleeding.
