Does hormonal coil treat uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in or around the muscle of the uterus. A hormonal coil releases progestogen inside the uterus and can thin the womb lining, which may reduce menstrual flow. That benefit is more relevant when bleeding is the main problem. A fibroid that changes the shape of the cavity can make insertion unsuitable or increase the chance of the coil moving. Pressure, pelvic fullness, frequent urination, and pain from the fibroid itself may not improve.

Treatment depends on the fibroids' size, number, position, symptoms, anaemia, and pregnancy plans. A scan can help the clinician decide whether a coil is appropriate.

Arrange an assessment for heavy periods, pelvic pressure, increasing abdominal size, or symptoms of anaemia such as tiredness and breathlessness.
