Does hormonal coil treat adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the womb lining grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. The hormonal coil releases a progestogen inside the uterus, which can make the lining thinner and reduce menstrual flow. Many people also notice less cramping when bleeding becomes lighter. The coil works mainly on symptoms; it does not remove tissue already within the uterine muscle, and it may not relieve pressure, pelvic pain, or an enlarged uterus for everyone.

Bleeding can be irregular during the first few months after insertion. Your clinician can review whether the device is suitable after considering your symptoms, uterine shape, pregnancy plans, and other causes of bleeding.

Arrange an assessment if you have prolonged, heavy, or painful periods, fatigue, or pelvic discomfort. The clinician may discuss an examination, ultrasound, or other tests before recommending treatment. If a hormonal coil is chosen, ask how insertion will be managed, what changes to bleeding are expected, and when follow-up should happen. Keep a record of bleeding, pain, and any effect on daily activities so treatment can be reviewed.

Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that rapidly soaks through pads, fainting, severe weakness, sudden severe pelvic pain, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. After insertion, urgent review is also needed for severe worsening pain, fever, unusual discharge, or concern that the coil has moved. Contact a clinician promptly if heavy bleeding continues, pain is worsening, or symptoms return after an initial improvement.
