Short answer

Hip Clicking and Snapping is a common presentation of Hip Impingement, although sound can also come from nearby tendons or the labrum.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What clicking or snapping may mean

A click may happen when the hip moves through a tight or irritated part of its range. A tendon can flick over bone, while an irritated labrum may create catching, clicking or a sense that the joint is not moving smoothly. Hip impingement can make certain positions uncomfortable and may occur alongside these sensations. A painless sound after sitting or changing position is different from clicking with deep pain, catching or reduced movement; the pattern matters more than the noise alone.

How to manage the symptom

Notice which positions reproduce the click and whether pain, locking or giving way accompanies it. Temporarily reduce deep squats, repeated pivoting or other clearly aggravating movements, but avoid complete inactivity. Gentle range-of-motion work and strengthening may help when prescribed for your findings. A physiotherapist can assess hip control and surrounding muscles; a doctor may consider imaging if symptoms persist, follow an injury or interfere with normal activity.

When to seek care

Book an assessment for repeated clicking with pain, catching, stiffness, weakness or a decline in walking or sport. Seek urgent help after a significant injury if you cannot bear weight, the hip looks abnormal, or severe pain is accompanied by numbness or a cold foot. Fever with a hot, swollen hip also needs prompt medical attention.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the sound is more consistent with impingement, a tendon or the labrum, and whether your hip needs imaging. Ask which movements to pause, which exercises are safe, and how to tell a harmless click from a sign that treatment needs review.

Questions people ask

Does clicking prove that I have hip impingement?

No. Clicking and snapping have several possible causes, and the sound cannot establish a diagnosis without the symptom pattern and examination.

Should I stop all exercise?

Usually, avoid only movements that provoke pain or catching while maintaining comfortable activity. A physiotherapist can adjust the programme.
