Can a hip fracture cause inability to bear weight?

Inability to Bear Weight is a very common presentation of Hip Fracture. A break can make the hip painful and unstable when the leg is loaded, particularly after a fall or impact. The person may be unable to stand, walk, or transfer safely. This symptom can also follow other serious injuries, so it needs prompt assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

A hip fracture may cause groin or thigh pain, guarding, swelling, bruising, reduced movement, or a leg that looks shortened or turned outward. Not every fracture has an obvious deformity, and a person may occasionally manage a few steps. A clinician will check circulation, sensation, movement, and pain, then use imaging to guide treatment.

Do not make the person walk to test the leg. Keep them in a comfortable position, avoid pulling or rotating the limb, and arrange emergency assessment after a fall with inability to bear weight. Do not give food or drink if urgent surgery might be needed unless a healthcare professional advises it. Bring a medication list if possible.

Treat sudden inability to bear weight after an injury as an emergency, especially with severe pain, an abnormal leg position, numbness, or a cold or pale foot. Seek urgent help for fainting, confusion, or breathing difficulty as well. Do not wait for symptoms to settle overnight when a fracture is possible.

Ask whether imaging shows a fracture and where it is located, what weight-bearing is allowed, and whether surgery is needed. Clarify pain relief, mobility aids, clot prevention, rehabilitation, home safety, and assessment for bone weakness or fall risks.
