Does hepatitis B cause fatigue?

Short answer
Fatigue is a common presentation of Hepatitis B and may be accompanied by nausea, poor appetite, fever, or discomfort in the upper abdomen.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Common symptom
- Hepatitis B can present with marked tiredness or low energy.
- Self-care
- Pacing, rest, fluids, and regular sleep may support recovery.
- Urgent warning
- Confusion, fainting, bleeding, or repeated vomiting needs urgent help.
Understanding the tiredness
Hepatitis B can cause an inflammatory illness that leaves you drained even after ordinary activities. Fatigue may occur with dark urine, pale stools, itchy skin, or yellowing of the eyes and skin. Some people have few symptoms, so energy levels alone cannot show whether the virus is present.
Low energy is also common with poor sleep, anaemia, thyroid problems, infections, stress, and medication effects. A clinician may ask how long it has lasted, examine you, and use blood tests to look for liver inflammation and other explanations.
Living with low energy
Pace tasks, take planned rests, and keep a regular sleep routine. Choose simple meals and drink enough fluids to support recovery. Gentle activity can be reasonable if it does not worsen symptoms, but stop and rest if you feel faint or unwell.
Avoid alcohol and check medicines, supplements, or herbal products with a clinician or pharmacist. Do not share razors or toothbrushes, cover bleeding cuts, and arrange medical advice if fatigue is new, persistent, or affecting work and daily care.
When to seek urgent care
Get urgent help if fatigue comes with confusion, unusual sleepiness, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, bleeding, yellowing that is rapidly worsening, or inability to keep fluids down. These symptoms need prompt assessment rather than home observation.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether hepatitis B testing is appropriate, what other causes of fatigue should be checked, how to pace activity, and how to protect people who may have had close contact with blood or body fluids.

Questions people ask
Is fatigue alone enough to diagnose hepatitis B?
No. Fatigue has many causes, and hepatitis B usually requires clinical assessment and testing for diagnosis.
Should I exercise if hepatitis B makes me tired?
Keep activity gentle and paced if tolerated, rest when symptoms increase, and ask a clinician for advice suited to your health.
