Does hepatitis A cause loss of appetite?

Liver inflammation can make you feel generally unwell and can change how food smells or tastes. Nausea, an unsettled stomach, and discomfort after eating may make meals less appealing. Some people also develop jaundice, dark urine, or pale stools as the illness progresses.

Loss of appetite has many possible explanations, so it does not identify hepatitis A by itself. A clinician considers the full pattern, possible exposure, examination findings, and testing when deciding what is causing it.

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if nausea makes drinking difficult. Try small portions of bland foods when you can, such as soup, rice, toast, or yoghurt, and choose nourishing foods that you tolerate. Do not force a large meal.

Rest and avoid alcohol. Check with a clinician or pharmacist before using medicines, herbal products, or supplements because some products can put extra strain on the liver. Keep good hand hygiene, especially after using the toilet and before handling food.

Get prompt medical advice if appetite loss continues, you are losing strength, or you cannot drink enough. Seek urgent help for repeated vomiting, very little urine, confusion, severe abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, or marked sleepiness. These signs can indicate dehydration or a more serious liver problem.
