Does heart failure cause fatigue?

You may tire during ordinary activities such as walking, bathing, or climbing stairs. Some people notice weakness, reduced stamina, difficulty concentrating, or a need to rest more often. Breathlessness, swollen ankles, a cough, or a faster change in weight can occur alongside fatigue when the heart is struggling to circulate blood effectively. Fatigue can also have other explanations, including anaemia, thyroid problems, infection, medication effects, or poor sleep, so the symptom alone does not identify its cause.

Note when tiredness began, what activities bring it on, and whether it is worsening. Record related symptoms and the medicines you take, including any recent changes. Arrange a medical assessment if fatigue is persistent, limits your usual routine, or occurs with breathlessness or swelling. A clinician may review your history, examine you, and check heart function and other possible causes.

Seek emergency help for severe or sudden breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or a rapid worsening of symptoms. Contact a healthcare professional promptly if you develop increasing swelling, breathlessness when resting, or fatigue that is markedly different from your usual pattern. Do not stop prescribed heart medicines without medical advice.

Ask what may be causing your fatigue, whether your current treatment needs review, which changes should be monitored at home, and what level of activity is appropriate. Bring a list of medicines and a brief record of symptoms so the discussion can focus on changes over time.
