Does having your tubes tied stop your period?

Female sterilisation, also called tubal ligation, blocks, seals or cuts the fallopian tubes. Sperm and an egg are less able to meet, which provides contraception, while the ovaries can continue releasing hormones and eggs. The uterine lining can therefore still build up and shed as a period.

A change in bleeding after the procedure may reflect another factor, such as stopping hormonal contraception, natural cycle changes, pregnancy, or a separate gynaecological problem. Tubal sterilisation itself is not expected to cause periods to stop.

Track when bleeding starts, how long it lasts, and whether flow or cramps differ from your usual pattern. If a period is late after sterilisation, take a pregnancy test and arrange medical advice, because pregnancy is uncommon but can occur and may need prompt assessment. Bring the date of the procedure and any contraception changes to the appointment.

Seek urgent care for severe or one-sided lower abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, or heavy bleeding with weakness, particularly if pregnancy is possible. Contact a clinician for repeated missed periods, bleeding between periods, new severe cramps, fever, or bleeding that is much heavier than your normal pattern.
