Telogen effluvium is increased shedding after a physical or emotional stress on the body, such as illness, surgery, major weight change, childbirth, or a restrictive diet. Follicles shift their timing, so shedding can become noticeable after the trigger rather than immediately. The condition usually produces diffuse thinning, not a single sharply outlined patch.
