Can haemorrhoids cause constipation?

Hard stools and straining can increase pressure around the anus, irritating swollen veins and making haemorrhoid symptoms more noticeable. Pain, itching, or fear of pain can then lead someone to delay a bowel movement. Holding stool allows more water to be absorbed, which may make it harder to pass later. This cycle can include bloating, a feeling of incomplete emptying, or small amounts of bright-red blood on the paper.

Constipation is not proof that haemorrhoids are present. Changes in diet, fluid intake, activity, medicines, pregnancy, and bowel conditions can also alter bowel habits.

Aim for gradual fibre from foods such as vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole grains, and drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Gentle walking can support bowel movement. Go when you feel the urge, allow time without straining, and avoid sitting on the toilet for long periods. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a stool-softening or laxative product is suitable, especially if you take regular medicines or are pregnant.

Arrange medical advice for bleeding that keeps returning, worsening anal pain, a new lump, unexplained weight loss, a persistent change in bowel habit, or constipation that does not improve with simple measures. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, black or tar-like stool, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or inability to pass stool and gas.

Ask what may be causing your constipation, whether your symptoms fit haemorrhoids, and which fibre or bowel medicine is appropriate. Mention bleeding, pain, medicines, pregnancy, and how long the change has lasted.
