Does an H. pylori breath test treat gastritis?

Gastritis describes inflammation or irritation of the stomach lining and can have several causes. During a breath test, you drink a prepared substance and provide breath samples; the test looks for chemical changes associated with H. pylori activity. A positive result supports infection as a possible contributor, while a negative result makes that cause less likely. The test does not soothe inflammation, close an ulcer or remove symptoms on the day.

Ask your clinician how to prepare, including whether any acid-suppressing medicines, antibiotics or other products need to be paused. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. If infection is found, treatment usually involves a clinician-selected combination of medicines, followed by a plan to check whether the infection has cleared. Your gastritis care may also address pain, nausea, reflux, alcohol, smoking or medicines that irritate the stomach.

Get urgent help for vomiting blood, black or tar-like stools, severe or sudden abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness or repeated vomiting that prevents fluids. Arrange medical review for persistent upper-abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing or symptoms that keep returning, because gastritis-like discomfort can have other causes.
