Does an H. pylori breath test treat gastritis?

How the structures involved in Gastritis differ from normal

Short answer

An H. pylori breath test does not treat gastritis; it checks whether Helicobacter pylori may be contributing to stomach inflammation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Test purpose
Looks for H. pylori infection
Treatment role
The test itself is not treatment

What the result means

Gastritis describes inflammation or irritation of the stomach lining and can have several causes. During a breath test, you drink a prepared substance and provide breath samples; the test looks for chemical changes associated with H. pylori activity. A positive result supports infection as a possible contributor, while a negative result makes that cause less likely. The test does not soothe inflammation, close an ulcer or remove symptoms on the day.

What to do next

Ask your clinician how to prepare, including whether any acid-suppressing medicines, antibiotics or other products need to be paused. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. If infection is found, treatment usually involves a clinician-selected combination of medicines, followed by a plan to check whether the infection has cleared. Your gastritis care may also address pain, nausea, reflux, alcohol, smoking or medicines that irritate the stomach.

When to seek urgent care

Get urgent help for vomiting blood, black or tar-like stools, severe or sudden abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness or repeated vomiting that prevents fluids. Arrange medical review for persistent upper-abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing or symptoms that keep returning, because gastritis-like discomfort can have other causes.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may be causing your gastritis, whether the breath test is suitable, how medicines affect the result, what treatment follows a positive test and when retesting should happen.

Questions people ask

Can the breath test reduce stomach pain?

No. It provides diagnostic information; symptom treatment requires a separate plan.

Can gastritis occur without H. pylori?

Yes. Gastritis has several possible causes, so a negative test does not rule out stomach inflammation.
