Does growth factor support help with unexplained fever?

Growth factors are medicines that encourage the bone marrow to make particular blood cells, often neutrophils. They can support recovery from treatment-related low counts in selected patients. Fever may instead signal an infection, inflammation, a medicine reaction, or another problem, so raising the white-cell count does not replace assessment of the fever's cause. The medicine itself can also cause aches or other effects.

Record your temperature and contact your cancer team promptly for instructions, particularly if you are receiving chemotherapy or have been told your neutrophil count is low. The team may arrange an examination, blood tests, cultures, or scans and may prescribe treatment aimed at the suspected cause. Do not take leftover antibiotics or begin growth factor injections without a plan made for you.

Seek urgent medical care for fever with chills, confusion, faintness, shortness of breath, chest pain, severe weakness, a new cough, burning urine, or redness around a line or wound. A fever during cancer treatment can require rapid evaluation even when other symptoms seem mild. Follow the temperature threshold and after-hours contact instructions given by your oncology team.
