Does a GP consultation treat an inguinal hernia?

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak area in the groin. During the appointment, the GP may ask when the swelling appears, whether it changes when you stand or cough, and whether you have pain, nausea or difficulty passing stool. They can examine the groin and decide whether the findings fit a hernia or another cause of a lump.

Some hernias can be monitored when symptoms are mild. A GP may discuss activity changes, pain relief that is suitable for you, and referral to a surgeon. Surgery is the treatment that repairs the weak area; a consultation helps you reach the right next step.

Arrange a GP appointment for a new groin bulge, recurring discomfort or a swelling that becomes more noticeable with standing or lifting. Note when it appears, whether it disappears when you lie down, and any effect on walking, work or exercise. Avoid activities that clearly worsen pain until you have advice, and do not forcefully push a painful or firm swelling back in.

Seek urgent medical care if the swelling becomes suddenly very painful, firm, discoloured or cannot be gently reduced, especially with vomiting, marked abdominal pain, bloating or inability to pass stool or wind. These features can indicate trapped or obstructed tissue and need prompt assessment.

Ask whether the examination confirms a hernia, whether watchful monitoring is reasonable, what activities to avoid, and whether you need a surgical referral. Ask which pain medicines are appropriate if you have kidney, stomach, pregnancy or other health concerns.
