Does a GP consultation treat genital herpes?

Genital herpes can cause clusters of painful blisters or sores, tingling, burning and discomfort when passing urine. A GP may examine the affected skin and ask when symptoms started, whether episodes have happened before and whether a partner has symptoms. A swab may be considered when a sore is present. Antiviral medicine can be prescribed for some episodes, and repeated outbreaks may lead to a discussion about preventive treatment.

Arrange assessment while a blister or sore is present if possible. Avoid vaginal, anal and oral sex until sores have healed and follow the clinician's advice about condoms, which reduce but do not remove transmission risk. Keep the area clean and dry, wear loose clothing and wash hands after touching it. Do not share prescribed medicine or apply irritating products.

Seek prompt medical advice for a first episode, severe pain, difficulty passing urine, sores spreading quickly, fever, pregnancy or a weakened immune system. Urgent care is needed if you cannot pass urine or feel seriously unwell. A sexual-health service can also provide confidential assessment and partner guidance.
