Does a GP consultation treat chronic cough?

A cough that continues may relate to asthma, reflux, allergies, infection, medication or another airway problem. The GP will ask when it began, whether it produces mucus, what triggers it and whether you have breathlessness, wheezing, fever, weight change or chest pain. They may examine your chest, review medicines and decide whether testing or specialist assessment is appropriate.

Treatment depends on the cause rather than the cough alone. A consultation may lead to an inhaler plan, advice for reflux or allergy symptoms, a medicine review, or treatment for an infection when the findings support it. Some people need monitoring while the cause becomes clearer.

Arrange a GP appointment if your cough has persisted, keeps returning or is affecting sleep, work or activity. Before the visit, note its pattern, possible triggers, mucus colour, smoking or vaping exposure, and every medicine or supplement you use. Do not start or stop prescription treatment without advice. Follow the agreed plan and record whether symptoms change after each step.

Seek urgent medical help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, coughing up more than a small streak of blood, sudden chest pain or rapid deterioration. Contact a clinician promptly if the cough is accompanied by persistent fever, repeated night sweats, unexplained weight loss or significant weakness.
