Does gout cause ankle swelling?

Short answer
Ankle Swelling is a common presentation of Gout, although other conditions can also make an ankle swell.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical joint response
- Swelling may occur with warmth, tenderness and restricted movement.
- Useful caution
- A hot swollen joint can also be caused by infection or injury.
What ankle swelling can mean
Gout develops when urate crystals irritate a joint. The immune response can make the ankle puffy, sore, warm and difficult to move. An attack may begin suddenly and can affect one ankle, but ankle swelling by itself does not identify the cause. An injury, infection, another form of arthritis or fluid-related problems may look similar.
A clinician may examine the joint and ask when the swelling began, whether the skin is hot or red, and whether you have had previous attacks. Testing may be needed when the diagnosis is uncertain.
What you can do now
Rest the ankle in a comfortable position and avoid activities that increase pain. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may ease discomfort for short periods; do not place ice directly on the skin. Keep taking prescribed gout medicines as directed, and check with a clinician before starting or stopping treatment. Do not massage a hot, very tender joint.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical care if ankle swelling comes with fever, chills, feeling very unwell, rapidly worsening redness, severe pain, or inability to move the joint. Infection can resemble gout and needs prompt treatment. Arrange a medical review for a first episode, repeated attacks, or swelling that does not settle.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the ankle pattern fits gout, whether joint-fluid or blood testing is appropriate, and which pain-relief options are suitable with your other medicines. You can also ask how to recognise a future flare and how to reduce its impact.
