Does gonorrhoea cause testicular pain?

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection that may inflame the urethra and nearby reproductive structures. Pain can be felt in one or both testicles, with swelling, tenderness, burning when passing urine, or discharge. Some people have few or no other symptoms, so the pattern of discomfort cannot confirm the cause by itself.

A clinician may ask about sexual contact, examine the groin and scrotum, and arrange urine or swab testing. Other infections, injury, a hernia, or twisting of the testicle can produce similar pain.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if gonorrhoea is possible or the pain is new. Avoid sexual contact until you have been assessed and follow any treatment and partner-notification advice you receive. Do not share leftover antibiotics, because the correct medicine depends on testing and local guidance.

Sudden severe testicular pain, a testicle sitting higher than usual, marked swelling, nausea, vomiting, fever, or pain after an injury needs urgent assessment. Testicular twisting is time-sensitive and cannot be ruled out safely at home. Seek emergency care if these features occur.

Ask whether urine or swab tests are appropriate, whether other infections need checking, when sexual contact can safely resume, and whether recent partners should be tested.
