Short answer

Buttock Pain is a common presentation of Gluteal Tendinopathy, often felt during loading or pressure on the affected side.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it may hurt

Gluteal tendinopathy affects the tendons that attach the buttock muscles to the outer hip. Pain may be felt in the buttock or around the outer hip, with tenderness when lying on that side, sitting for a long time, climbing stairs, walking uphill, or standing on one leg.

Symptoms often respond to the amount and type of load placed on the tendon. Buttock pain can have several causes, so an examination helps distinguish tendon pain from problems involving the lower back, hip joint, or nearby tissues.

What you can do

Temporarily reduce steep hills, repeated stairs, long walks, and positions that clearly increase pain. Avoid stretching the buttock aggressively or repeatedly crossing the legs if those positions compress the sore tendon. Keep moving gently and change position regularly.

A physiotherapist can guide a gradual strengthening plan for the hip and buttock muscles. Increase activity step by step, using your pain response during the activity and later that day as feedback rather than pushing through a sharp increase.

When to seek care

Arrange a clinical assessment if pain is persistent, worsening, disturbing sleep, or limiting walking, stairs, or work. Seek urgent care after a significant fall if you cannot bear weight or the hip appears abnormal.

Get prompt medical advice for new leg weakness, spreading numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, or severe pain that began suddenly without a clear strain.

Questions for your doctor

Does my pain pattern fit gluteal tendinopathy? Which movements are loading the tendon, and what strengthening exercises are suitable now? How should I adjust walking, stairs, or sleep positions while it settles?

Questions people ask

Can gluteal tendinopathy cause pain at the outer hip as well as the buttock?

Yes. The tendon attachments are near the outer hip, so symptoms can be felt in either area or both.

Is rest alone enough for gluteal tendinopathy?

Reducing aggravating load can help, but a gradual, tailored strengthening programme is often useful for restoring tolerance.
