Can genitourinary syndrome of menopause cause vaginal dryness?

Oestrogen changes after menopause can reduce moisture and make vaginal tissue thinner, less elastic and more sensitive. You may notice dryness during the day, burning with urination, irritation, or discomfort during sex. Similar symptoms can also be caused by some medicines, irritation, infection or other vaginal conditions, so dryness alone does not identify its cause.

Use a vaginal moisturiser regularly if it suits you, and choose a water-based lubricant for sexual activity. Wash gently with water or a mild unscented product and avoid douching, perfumes and irritating wipes. If symptoms continue, a clinician can discuss local hormonal treatment or other options and check whether another condition is contributing.

Make an appointment if dryness lasts, disrupts sleep or intimacy, causes repeated soreness, or comes with urinary symptoms. Seek prompt assessment for bleeding after menopause, unusual discharge, sores, fever, severe pain or a new lump. These symptoms may need evaluation beyond treatment for dryness.
