Can genitourinary syndrome of menopause cause bleeding after menopause?

Lower oestrogen can leave vaginal and vulval tissue thinner, drier and more prone to irritation. Minor friction from sex, an examination or everyday activity may then cause spotting. Bleeding can also come from the cervix, uterus, polyps, hormone treatment or other conditions. The presence of genitourinary symptoms does not establish the reason for bleeding.

Note when the bleeding occurred, how much there was, whether it followed sex, and whether you had pain, discharge or urinary symptoms. Do not insert products or have penetrative sex if these activities trigger bleeding until you have advice. Contact a clinician for an assessment; they may discuss an examination and tests based on your age, history and symptoms.

Arrange medical review for any bleeding after menopause, including light spotting that happens once. Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy or persistent, or if it occurs with dizziness, fainting, severe pelvic pain, fever or weakness. Prompt assessment helps identify the source and the right treatment.
