Can genitourinary syndrome of menopause cause low sex drive?

Lower oestrogen can make vaginal and vulval tissues thinner, drier and more sensitive. Burning or discomfort with sexual activity may make intimacy feel difficult, which can reduce interest over time. Changes in sleep, mood, body image, relationships or other menopause symptoms can also affect desire. Low sex drive has several possible causes, so the symptom alone does not identify one condition.

Notice whether reduced desire occurs alongside dryness, pain, urinary symptoms or hot flushes. A water-based lubricant during sexual activity and a regular vaginal moisturiser may improve comfort; avoid fragranced washes and products that irritate the vulval skin. A clinician can discuss local hormonal treatment or other options when appropriate, and can review medicines, mood and relationship factors that may contribute.

Arrange a medical appointment if low desire is persistent, upsetting, affects a relationship, or began after a medicine or health change. Seek prompt assessment for bleeding after menopause, new sores, unusual discharge, severe pain or urinary symptoms. These signs need their own evaluation even when genitourinary symptoms are present.
