Does genetic carrier screening treat Turner syndrome?

Turner syndrome is related to missing or altered X-chromosome material. Carrier screening usually examines whether someone carries gene changes that could be passed to a child. It is different from a diagnostic test for chromosome conditions, and it cannot add missing chromosome material, alter development, or reverse features of Turner syndrome.

Testing may still be discussed when a person with Turner syndrome, or a family member, is planning a pregnancy. The appropriate test depends on the person being tested, the family history, and the reproductive question. Genetic counselling can explain what a result does and does not say.

If Turner syndrome is suspected, ask for an assessment that can confirm or clarify the chromosome finding. If it has already been diagnosed, care may involve coordinated reviews of growth, puberty, heart health, hearing, thyroid function, bone health, and fertility. The plan is individual and may include hormone treatment or specialist support, but carrier screening is not a treatment.

Take any previous chromosome or genetic reports to the appointment. Ask whether testing is intended for diagnosis, family planning, or checking a relative, because each purpose can require a different approach.

Arrange medical review if you have concerns about delayed puberty, absent periods, fertility, or a known Turner syndrome diagnosis. Seek urgent help for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or new neurological symptoms, because these symptoms need prompt assessment regardless of genetic testing.
