Does genetic carrier screening treat sickle cell carrier?

Sickle cell trait means a person carries a haemoglobin gene variant. It is different from sickle cell disease, and many carriers do not have the disease symptoms. Screening identifies carrier status; it does not remove the variant or change someone into a non-carrier. The result becomes especially useful before pregnancy because testing both partners helps determine whether a baby could inherit a significant haemoglobin condition. A laboratory result may need confirmation and genetic counselling.

Share the report with a doctor or genetic counsellor, particularly before pregnancy. Ask whether your partner should be tested and whether haemoglobin analysis or molecular confirmation is needed. If both partners carry relevant variants, discuss prenatal diagnosis, embryo testing in assisted reproduction and other reproductive choices. Do not take iron for presumed anaemia without checking whether iron deficiency is present.

Seek medical care for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, severe dehydration or unusual severe pain. These symptoms are not proof of sickle cell disease and should be assessed on their own merits. Arrange routine review if a screening result is unclear, unexpected or conflicts with previous family information.
