Does genetic carrier screening treat recurrent miscarriage?

Carrier screening looks for selected inherited gene variants in a person who may be well. Recurrent miscarriage can have many possible explanations, and carrier screening addresses only particular inherited conditions. It cannot repair a pregnancy, prevent every miscarriage or explain every loss. Results are interpreted alongside pregnancy history, examination and other tests. Testing pregnancy tissue, when available, may answer a different question from testing the parents.

Arrange an appointment with an obstetrician, fertility specialist or genetic counsellor to review the timing and circumstances of each loss. Bring prior ultrasound, laboratory and pathology reports. Ask whether both partners should have carrier screening and whether other investigations are appropriate. If a shared variant is found, counselling can explain options for a future pregnancy or assisted reproduction.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness or fainting during pregnancy. These symptoms can require immediate assessment and are not explained by a carrier-screening result. Outside an urgent episode, book timely review after repeated losses so evaluation is coordinated.
