Does genetic carrier screening treat genetic risk in related couples?

Related biological partners may share gene variants inherited from a common ancestor. Carrier screening uses blood or saliva to look for variants linked with particular inherited conditions. A carrier often has no symptoms, but a shared variant can affect the chance of an affected pregnancy. Screening cannot change a gene variant, remove family relatedness or predict every possible condition.

Discuss screening before pregnancy when possible, especially if either family has childhood illness, unexplained developmental problems, repeated infant deaths or a known inherited diagnosis. Both partners may need testing. Depending on findings, options can include pregnancy testing, embryo testing in assisted reproduction, donor eggs or sperm, or another family-building route.

Arrange genetic counselling promptly if a family member has a confirmed inherited condition, both partners are reported as carriers of the same condition, or you are already pregnant and a result needs interpretation. Bleeding, severe pain or fainting in pregnancy needs urgent obstetric care; carrier screening does not diagnose those symptoms.
