Does gastroenteritis cause abdominal pain?

Gastroenteritis is irritation or inflammation of the stomach and intestines, commonly caused by an infection. The digestive tract may contract more strongly, become sensitive, and move contents quickly. This can feel like cramping, gripping, or soreness, sometimes before diarrhoea or vomiting and sometimes at the same time. Pain may ease after passing stool or gas, but it should not be assumed to be gastroenteritis when it is severe, localised, or unlike your usual symptoms. Other abdominal conditions can look similar.

Rest and take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. When hunger returns, begin with small portions and increase gradually as tolerated. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Avoid alcohol and medicines that could irritate the stomach unless a clinician has advised them. A pharmacist or doctor can help choose suitable symptom relief, particularly for children, older adults, pregnancy, or long-term medical conditions.

Arrange medical advice if pain is not settling, diarrhoea or vomiting continues, or you are struggling to drink. Seek urgent care for severe or steadily worsening pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, faintness, confusion, very little urine, repeated vomiting, or blood in stool or vomit. New pain focused in one area also deserves prompt assessment.
