Does a ganglion cyst cause wrist pain?

A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled swelling near a wrist joint or tendon. It may be visible as a smooth lump, or it may sit deeper and cause aching without an obvious bump. Pain can increase when you bend the wrist, grip an object, lean on the hand, or repeat the activity that irritates the area. Some cysts cause no symptoms at all.

The swelling can change in size over time. Wrist pain has other possible causes, so a clinician may examine the lump, movement, grip, and nearby nerves before deciding whether the cyst explains your symptoms.

Reduce activities that repeatedly load the painful wrist for a short period, while keeping gentle movement within comfort. Avoid squeezing, puncturing, or trying to burst the lump, because this can injure the skin, nerves, blood vessels, or joint.

Arrange an assessment if pain persists, the lump enlarges, or wrist movement becomes limited. Management may involve observation, support, pain relief advice, or a procedure depending on the examination and how much the symptoms interfere with daily tasks.

Seek prompt medical care for a rapidly enlarging or very painful swelling, redness, warmth, fever, or drainage. Urgent assessment is also sensible after an injury if the wrist looks deformed or you cannot use the hand.

Numbness, tingling, unusual weakness, or fingers that become cold or change colour can indicate pressure or another problem affecting nerves or circulation and should not be ignored.
