Can gallstones cause vomiting?

When a stone obstructs the gallbladder outlet, pressure and inflammation can cause strong pain in the upper abdomen. The digestive system may respond with nausea and vomiting. Episodes can follow a meal and may be accompanied by pain beneath the right ribs, discomfort in the upper middle abdomen, or pain toward the back. Vomiting has many other causes, including infection and food-related illness, so it cannot confirm gallstones by itself.

Rest and take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you can keep fluids down. Once vomiting settles, try small, plain meals and avoid foods that have triggered symptoms. Record the timing, abdominal pain, fever, bowel changes, and urine colour. A clinician may recommend an examination, blood tests, or ultrasound to investigate the cause.

Seek urgent care for repeated vomiting, severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, yellow eyes or skin, blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, faintness, confusion, or very little urine. These symptoms can indicate dehydration, inflammation, bleeding, or a bile-duct blockage. Prompt assessment is also needed when a child, older adult, or pregnant person cannot keep fluids down.
