Does frozen embryo transfer treat ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome?

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can follow medicines used to stimulate the ovaries. Enlarged ovaries and changes in blood-vessel fluid movement may cause abdominal swelling, pain, nausea or fluid collecting outside the bloodstream. A frozen embryo transfer uses an embryo created earlier and places it in the uterus during a later cycle; it is a fertility treatment, not a treatment for the ovarian reaction.

If pregnancy begins while ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is active, pregnancy hormones can prolong or worsen the illness. A fertility team may therefore freeze embryos and postpone transfer until symptoms and clinical findings settle. The decision depends on severity, examination and monitoring.

Contact your fertility clinic if you have increasing bloating, pelvic discomfort, vomiting or changes in urination after stimulation. The team may assess your weight, hydration, urine output, breathing and abdomen, and may arrange blood tests or ultrasound. Follow the fluid and medication plan you were given, and do not change medicines without advice.

Ask whether transfer should be postponed, what monitoring is needed, and which symptoms mean you should attend an emergency department. Embryo transfer can be reconsidered after recovery; it does not remove the need to manage the syndrome itself.

Seek urgent medical assessment for shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, very little urine, marked swelling, or sudden one-sided leg pain. These symptoms can signal fluid shifts, dehydration or a blood clot and should not wait for a routine fertility appointment.
