Does folliculitis cause itchy scalp?

Scalp folliculitis affects hair follicles and may produce small red or pus-filled bumps, tenderness and itch. It can follow sweating, friction, occlusive hair products or hair removal. Dandruff, contact irritation, eczema and other scalp conditions can also itch, so the presence of itch alone does not identify folliculitis.

Notice whether the itch is concentrated around bumps, whether flakes are present, and whether symptoms began after a new product. These details help a clinician narrow the possibilities.

Cleanse the scalp gently and rinse products thoroughly. Avoid scratching, tight headwear and heavy oils until the cause is clearer. Do not share combs, brushes or towels if bumps are draining. Keep a note of new products, sweating or shaving that preceded the flare, and seek tailored treatment if it does not settle.

Arrange an assessment for painful bumps, crusting, drainage, spreading redness, patchy hair loss or an itch that repeatedly disrupts sleep. Seek urgent care for fever, rapidly expanding swelling or severe swelling around the face or eyes.
