Does fibromyalgia cause morning joint stiffness?

Short answer
Morning Joint Stiffness is a common presentation of Fibromyalgia, but it does not identify the condition by itself.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Needs assessment of the whole symptom pattern
How the symptom fits
Most people with Fibromyalgia notice morning joint stiffness, often alongside widespread pain, tiredness, unrefreshing sleep or difficulty concentrating. The sensation may feel as if the joints are stiff even when there is no visible swelling inside them. Inflammatory arthritis and other problems can also cause morning stiffness, so its duration, pattern, swelling and effect on movement help guide an assessment. A symptom alone cannot establish the diagnosis.
Ways to manage mornings
Gentle range-of-motion movements, a warm shower and gradual activity may make the transition out of bed easier. Pace tasks, protect sleep routines and build activity slowly rather than alternating overexertion with long rest. Record stiffness, pain, sleep quality and any swelling for your clinician. A tailored programme may combine education, exercise, sleep support and medicines when appropriate.
When to seek care
Book an assessment if stiffness persists, limits daily activity or comes with swollen joints, fevers, a rash or unexplained weight change. Seek urgent care for sudden weakness, a hot and very swollen joint, chest pain, severe breathlessness or new neurological symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Could another condition be contributing to my morning stiffness? What examination or tests are appropriate? Which movements are safe to start? How can we improve sleep and manage flares?
