Does fibrocystic breast changes cause breast pain?

Fibrocystic breast changes can include cysts, fibrous tissue and areas of normal glandular tissue that feel nodular. Hormonal changes may cause breast tissue to swell or become more sensitive, creating aching, heaviness, fullness or pain. Symptoms may affect one or both breasts and may follow a cyclical pattern.

Pain alone cannot show what is causing it. A clinician may examine the painful area and consider imaging when pain is persistent, localised, or accompanied by a lump or another change.

Track when the pain occurs, where it is, how long it lasts and whether it changes with your menstrual cycle. A supportive bra, warm or cool compress and avoiding pressure on the area may help. Discuss suitable pain relief with a pharmacist or clinician if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or take regular medicines.

Arrange a review if pain continues, interferes with sleep or daily activities, or is focused in one area. Bring your symptom notes so the pattern is easier to assess.

Seek prompt care for pain with a new lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, redness, warmth or fever. Sudden severe pain, chest pressure, breathlessness or fainting needs emergency help. These symptoms need evaluation and should not be explained away as fibrocystic change without an examination.

Ask: Does the pain follow a hormonal pattern? Do I need an examination or imaging? Could a cyst or another condition be contributing? Which pain-relief options are suitable for me?
