Does fasciotomy treat compartment syndrome?

Muscles, blood vessels and nerves sit within tight tissue compartments. Swelling or bleeding can raise pressure in that space and reduce circulation. During a fasciotomy, a surgeon opens the tight covering to give swollen tissue room. The wound may need staged care and closure after swelling settles. Exertional compartment syndrome follows a different pattern and may be assessed and managed differently, so the cause and timing matter.

Acute compartment syndrome is an emergency. If it is suspected after an injury, cast, crush event or surgery, go to an emergency department immediately rather than waiting for an appointment. Do not loosen, remove or alter a cast yourself.
