Does surgical excision treat melanoma?

When melanoma is confined to the skin, excision removes the visible tumour and a margin of nearby skin. The specimen is examined to confirm the diagnosis and assess features that influence staging and further management. The margin chosen depends on the tumour’s pathology and location. Some people need additional assessment or treatment beyond the initial operation, so excision should be understood as a key part of care rather than a promise that one procedure answers every clinical question.

Arrange rapid specialist review for a changing or suspicious mole, especially one with asymmetry, irregular borders, multiple colours, growth, bleeding, or persistent itching. Do not remove it at home. Before surgery, ask how the diagnosis was established, what margin is planned, whether further surgery may be considered after pathology, and how the scar will be managed. Keep follow-up appointments even when the wound appears healed.

Contact the surgical team for bleeding that does not stop with pressure, wound separation, increasing redness, swelling, pain, drainage, or fever. Seek urgent specialist advice for a new or changing lesion, a lump near the scar, or persistent symptoms after treatment. These findings require assessment and should not be interpreted from appearance alone.

Ask what the pathology report will measure, whether the excision is diagnostic or definitive, when results will be reviewed, and whether additional surgery or specialist treatment could be needed. Clarify the follow-up schedule, skin self-checks, and practical scar-care instructions.
