Does epidural steroid injection treat sciatica?

Sciatica describes nerve-related symptoms that travel from the lower back or buttock into the leg. A disc problem, narrowing around a nerve, or another source can irritate the nerve. The injection delivers anti-inflammatory medicine into the epidural space near the suspected nerve. If inflammation contributes to your symptoms, pain may become easier to manage while you resume movement and rehabilitation. It will not correct every structural cause, and weakness or numbness needs separate monitoring. Ask for an assessment that maps your pain, sensation, reflexes, and strength. A return of symptoms calls for review rather than assuming another injection is needed.

Seek urgent medical attention for new bladder or bowel-control difficulty, numbness around the saddle area, or rapidly progressing weakness. Get prompt advice for fever, a worsening injection-site wound, or severe new symptoms after the procedure. Sudden neurological changes require examination even when the pain itself feels familiar.
