Does endometrial hyperplasia cause heavy periods?

Endometrial hyperplasia means the lining of the womb has become thicker than expected, often because oestrogen is not balanced by enough progesterone. A thicker or irregular lining may shed unpredictably, causing heavy, prolonged, or irregular bleeding. Similar bleeding can occur with fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis, hormonal changes, medicines, pregnancy-related conditions, or other disorders, so symptoms alone cannot identify hyperplasia.

Arrange an appointment if your periods are unusually heavy, last longer than expected, or interfere with work and sleep. A clinician may ask about cycle changes, pregnancy possibility, medicines, and bleeding symptoms. They may recommend an examination, blood tests, ultrasound, or a sample of the womb lining. Treatment depends on the type of hyperplasia and your pregnancy plans.

Seek urgent help if heavy bleeding causes faintness, marked weakness, chest discomfort, or shortness of breath, or if severe pelvic pain accompanies bleeding. Prompt review is needed when bleeding continues, returns between periods, or begins after menopause.
