Does endometrial ablation help with heavy periods?

Endometrial ablation uses heat, cold, radiofrequency, or another method to treat the lining of the womb. A thinner or scarred lining may produce less menstrual bleeding. Some people have much lighter periods afterward, while others continue to bleed or stop bleeding. The result can depend on the cause of heavy periods, the method used, and individual factors.

Ablation is not contraception and does not protect against pregnancy. Pregnancy after ablation can be dangerous, so reliable contraception is needed if pregnancy is possible. The procedure is generally considered only when future pregnancy is not wanted.

A gynaecologist should assess the cause of heavy bleeding before treatment. This may include a history, examination, pregnancy testing, blood tests, and imaging or sampling of the womb lining when appropriate. Ask about medicines, fibroids or polyps, contraception, and alternatives that may address the cause or preserve fertility.

Seek urgent care for bleeding that soaks through pads rapidly, faintness, chest pain, shortness of breath, severe pelvic pain, or possible pregnancy. After ablation, contact your care team for fever, worsening pain, foul-smelling discharge, or bleeding that concerns you.

Ask which ablation method is proposed, whether your uterus and bleeding pattern make it appropriate, how recovery is managed, what contraception is advised, and what happens if heavy periods continue.
