Does elbow dislocation cause elbow stiffness?

Short answer
Elbow stiffness is a common presentation of elbow dislocation, especially after swelling, tissue injury, or a period of immobilisation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why stiffness develops
A dislocation stretches or tears structures that stabilise the elbow and can cause pain and swelling around the joint. The arm may then be held still in a splint, which protects healing tissues but reduces movement. Scar tissue and changes inside the joint can add to the restriction. Stiffness may affect bending, straightening, or turning the palm up and down. The severity also depends on associated fractures, ligament injury, nerve symptoms, and how rehabilitation progresses.
Supporting safe recovery
Follow the treating clinician's instructions about protection and movement. Once movement is permitted, physiotherapy can use measured exercises to restore range without stressing healing tissues. Do not force the elbow, lift heavily, or return to contact activity before clearance. Keep follow-up appointments so alignment, stability, nerve function, and motion can be checked. Persistent loss of movement deserves review because the plan may need adjustment.
When to seek care urgently
An elbow dislocation is an urgent injury, particularly when it has just occurred. Seek emergency care for visible deformity, severe pain, an open wound, a cold or discoloured hand, absent pulses, new numbness, or inability to move the fingers. After treatment, promptly report worsening swelling, escalating pain, or new weakness. The Elbow Dislocation page has related information.
Questions for your doctor
Ask when elbow movement should begin, which exercises are safe, whether a fracture or ligament injury changes the plan, how stiffness will be monitored, and when driving, work, or sport may resume.

Questions people ask
Can stiffness remain after an elbow dislocation?
It can persist, particularly when the injury is complex, so follow-up and guided rehabilitation matter.
Can I stretch the elbow hard to regain movement?
No. Use only the movement and loading permitted by your treating team.
