Does an electrocardiogram treat heart failure?

An ECG uses stickers placed on the skin to record the heart’s rhythm and electrical signals. A clinician may use it when heart failure is suspected, when symptoms change, or when checking for rhythm problems that can strain the heart. The tracing can support assessment alongside an examination, blood tests, imaging and other tests.

Heart failure treatment depends on its cause and how the heart is working. It may involve prescribed medicines, treatment of an abnormal rhythm or valve problem, and practical advice about activity, salt, fluids or monitoring. An ECG can help the care team choose or review this plan, but the test itself does not strengthen the heart or remove excess fluid.

If you have been referred for an ECG, attend the appointment and bring a list of medicines, including non-prescription products. Tell the clinician about breathlessness, swelling, chest discomfort, palpitations, tiredness or fainting, and say whether these symptoms are new or worsening. Do not stop heart medicines because of an ECG appointment unless the prescriber tells you to.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pressure or pain, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or coughing up pink frothy fluid. Contact your heart-care team promptly if swelling, breathlessness when lying down, or a sudden weight increase is getting worse, because these can signal fluid buildup.

Ask what your ECG showed, which other tests are needed, what may be causing your heart failure, and how you will know whether treatment is working.
