Does diffuse large B-cell lymphoma cause swollen lymph nodes?

The lymph nodes may enlarge in the neck, chest, armpit, abdomen or groin. They can feel firm or rubbery and may be painless. Some people also develop fever, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, tiredness or reduced appetite. These features can occur with lymphoma, but enlarged lymph nodes can also follow infections or other conditions, so the symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Doctors assess the pattern, how long the swelling has lasted, and whether other areas are involved. Examination and imaging may show which nodes need closer assessment. A biopsy of a lymph node is often used to identify the cell type and confirm a diagnosis.

Arrange a medical assessment if a node remains enlarged, continues to grow, feels hard or fixed, or appears without a clear recent infection. Tell the clinician where you first noticed it and describe changes in size, tenderness and other symptoms. Do not repeatedly press or massage the area, because this can make it sore and harder to judge changes.

If lymphoma is suspected, the assessment may include blood tests, imaging and tissue sampling. The results guide treatment planning; they are not determined by the presence of a swollen node alone.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling in the neck, severe weakness, confusion, or a high fever with marked illness. Contact a clinician soon for persistent night sweats, ongoing fever, unexplained weight loss, or swelling in several body areas.

Ask which causes fit the node's location and examination, whether imaging or a biopsy is appropriate, and which changes should prompt an earlier review. You can also ask how results will be explained and what symptoms should be recorded while waiting.
